This framework identifies and describes the attributes and abilities needed by physicians in their diverse roles for improving patient care. The framework is patient centred, which involves understanding the patient's values, beliefs, biases and social context. Some of the standards focus on cultural safety, establishing therapeutic relationships, respecting diversity, and recognizing the impact of different values, biases or perspectives of patients and healthcare providers on the quality of care.
