This article seeks to scrutinize the capacity of cultural awareness training to improve cross-cultural clinical encounters and patient outcomes by examining the underpinning philosophies, assumptions, and verification of the effectiveness of cultural awareness training and its derivatives. The author concludes that cultural awareness approaches tend to over-generalize and are too simplistic and impractical, and offers suggestions for improving cross-cultural health care interactions and research.
