This paper provides a review of literature on Indigenous child rearing to determine whether traditional practices are still being used and how they differ from mainstream practices. It discusses traditional Indigenous parenting practices within the context of colonialism and historic trauma, with a focus on child autonomy, extended family, fatherhood, attachment, developmental milestones, discipline, language, ceremony and spirituality.
