Indigenous Health, Northern Health (NH) and the National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health (NCCIH) present this short animated video on the topic of Compassion-Informed Care for health care professionals. This resource is intended to support health care practitioners in their ongoing journey to create respectful relationships with the people whom they serve, specifically Indigenous peoples and communities.
Compassion-informed care starts by recognizing and acknowledging that trauma exists, and focuses on people’s strength and resilience. A compassion-informed approach is based on encouraging open conversation by listening to people’s stories and building trusting, respectful relationships.
Dr. Margo Greenwood, Vice President, Indigenous Health, Northern Health and Academic Leader for the NCCIH is the executive producer of this project.
Dr. Evan Adams, a member of the Tla’amin First Nation in BC and Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Public Health, Indigenous Services Canada, narrates the six-minute video. Dr. Adams works to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and ensure that the health system is safe and accessible for Indigenous people across the country.
Written by Shelby Petersen and Julia Petrasek MacDonald and animated by Joanne Gervais, this video reviews key terms such as developmental and historical trauma.
The video, released in 2022, is available to watch on the Indigenous Health website and the NCCIH website.
