Vaccine uptake among First Nations, Inuit, and Métis populations

September 2024

Confidence in and acceptance of vaccines is considered an important tool for disease prevention. Nevertheless, vaccine coverage is uneven across Indigenous populations in Canada due to structural, social, and interpersonal factors.

This fact sheet provides an overview of the literature on the extent of vaccine coverage across First Nations, Inuit, and Métis populations over the past 15 years in relation to routine childhood vaccinations, pandemic events, and seasonal influenza. It also examines the roots of vaccine hesitancy and the barriers to and facilitators of vaccination in these populations.
